(HBO) – There were few sports pitches in Noong Luong commune (in Mai Chau) five years ago, prompting local authorities to launch a campaign to build some. Locals helped by donating their time and land. Now, the commune has five sports facilities, while one in Pieng Dau hamlet is under construction.

Primary school pupils in Noong Luong commune (Mai Chau) play football after school.

To implement the sports movement, local authorities mobilised funding to construct facilities while establishing sports clubs. As a result, the movement was enthusiastically supported by locals. Some 3,000 working days were contributed while 6,000 m2 of land was donated for sports facilities. Hieng hamlet and Na Du hamlet donated 2,300 m2 and 1,200m2 respectively.

Local residents donate land to build sports grounds.

The land donation for sports facilities construction was well supported by people in Hieng hamlet as they wanted to play football, volleyball and badminton, said Ngan Van Hien, a resident in Hieng hamlet.

His family donated 730 m2of land to the movement, he said, adding that he joined local authorities in persuading local residents to donate land and their time.

The efforts have improved public awareness of the benefits of doing exercise. Now, 30 percent of the local population are frequent exercisers. The commune has 15 men’s and women’s football teams, while each hamlet has one men’s and one women’s volleyball team. Sports facilities are full of people exercising in the afternoon. Traditional sports such as crossbow shooting (bắn nỏ), spinning top (đánh cù), stick pushing (đẩy gậy) are held in early spring. The commune holds a sports festival every three years, while competitions are usually organized on the occasions of national holidays. Amateur athletes of Noong Luong commune join in every competition held by Mai Chau district and have won top prizes, including third prize in the male category in a badminton competition in 2016 and second prize in a female category in the 2017 competition.

To promote the "The whole population take exercise following model of President Ho Chi Minh” campaign, the locality will enhance the quality of sports activities in hamlets, said Lo Van Luan, a culture official of Noong Luong commune.

More resources will be mobilised to help locals engage in physical training thus improving community health while ensuring social security and eliminating social evils.
