Serena Williams returned to the world’s top 30 in the WTA rankings released on Monday after finishing as Wimbledon runner-up.

The 36-year-old American climbed 153 places to 28th despite losing Saturday’s final at the All England Club to German Angelique Kerber, Williams’s fourth tournament since giving birth to her daughter 10 months ago.

* Novak Djokovic’s fourth Wimbledon crown propelled him back to 10th in the world after falling outside the top 20 for the first time since 2006. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson moved up three places to a career-high fifth after reaching the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career. Spaniard Rafael Nadal remained at the top of the rankings and increased his lead over number two Roger Federer, whose Wimbledon title defence was ended by Anderson in a marathon quarter-final.

* London’s transport bosses temporarily renamed an underground station in honor of England soccer team manager Gareth Southgate after the team flew home following their run to the last four of the World Cup. Southgate proved popular with England’s fans for helping create a renewed sense of optimism and after the team returned home on Sunday Transport for London (TfL) rebranded Southgate underground station in North London as the "Gareth Southgate” station for 48 hours.

* Argentina great Diego Maradona took over as chairman of Belarus soccer club Dynamo Brest on Monday after signing a three-year contract and said he hoped the country's President Alexander Lukashenko would become a fan. Maradona has caused a sensation in Belarus by agreeing to take charge of a club that was rescued from bankruptcy two years ago. He plans to move to Brest after parting company with Al-Fujairah FC where he was coach of the United Arab Emirates club.

* Tiger Woods, back at the British Open this week for the first time since 2015, will begin his campaign in Thursday's opening round at Carnoustie in a three-ball with Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Russell Knox of Scotland. American Woods, 14-times major champion, Matsuyama and Knox, winner of the Irish Open two weeks ago, will tee-off at 1521 local time.

* Juventus's record signing Cristiano Ronaldo has said his move from Real Madrid was a "well thought out decision" as the Portugal forward aims to help his new club win their first Champions League title in more than two decades. Ronaldo, who joined the Italian champions last week on a four-year contract for 100 million euros (US$117.07 million), added that he did not want to stay in his comfort zone after winning three straight European Cups with Real.
