Germany will host the Euro 2024 football tournament after comfortably beating the only other bidders Turkey in a two-horse contest on Thursday.

Germany, which previously staged the event as West Germany in 1988 and successfully held the 2006 World Cup, won the vote among UEFA’s executive committee after a four-year campaign. Germany received 12 of the 17 votes with four for Turkey and one abstention.

* The Asian Football Confederation plans to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system at next year's Asian Cup finals, the regional governing body said on Thursday. The extended 2019 Asian Cup will see 24 teams taking part for the first time, up from the 16 that competed in the last four editions.

* Madrid has been selected to host the first two revamped Davis Cup finals in 2019 and 2020, the premier international men's team event organisers announced on Thursday. The revised week-long, 18-team finals are scheduled to be held at La Caja Magica, the current venue for the Madrid Open, in November 2019, while the following edition will be held at either the same location or the WiZink Centre.

* Japan will not introduce daylight saving time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo because public opinion is against the proposal, the Asahi Newspaper reported on Thursday. Organisers of the Tokyo Olympics originally floated the idea of setting clocks back one to two hours after scorching heat this summer killed at least 120 people, raising concerns about the safety of athletes, particularly marathon runners.

* UEFA has confirmed the use of video assistant referees (VARs) in the Champions League from next season and plans to use them at Euro 2020, European football's ruling body said on Thursday. UEFA's executive committee agreed that the VAR system would be used in the final qualifying round, the group stage and the knockout stages of next season's Champions League.

* Cristiano Ronaldo will be suspended for only one game after his dismissal in the Champions League, paving the way for his return for Juventus against his former club Manchester United, European football's governing body UEFA said on Thursday. The 33-year-old's punishment will not exceed a one-game suspension which means he will only be unavailable for next week's Group H clash at Swiss side Young Boys.

* FC Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that Spain international midfielder Sergio Busquets has agreed a new contract with the club. The 30-year-old signed his new deal on Thursday lunchtime prolonging his stay at the Camp Nou Stadium until the end of June 2023 and increasing his buyout clause from 200 to 500 million euros.

* The Russian city of St Petersburg will host the 2023 world ice hockey championship, the Russian hockey federation said in a statement on Thursday. The federation's deputy president, Roman Rotenberg, told TASS news agency that the 2024 and 2025 world championships will be held in the Czech Republic and Sweden, respectively.

* A bid for Wembley stadium is an open goal for Britain’s top football body. Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan has offered a staggering 600 million pounds for the UK’s national stadium.

* Tiger Woods will partner Patrick Reed against Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood in the fourth and final fourballs match when the Ryder Cup gets underway on Friday, a grouping sure to be the number one draw for fans at Le Golf National.

* Ashleigh Barty beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 5-7 6-4 to reach the semi-finals at the Wuhan Open on Thursday. The Australian world number 17 next plays Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated 2016 finalist Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-3.
