As the reigning Asian runners-up, Vietnam U23s are among the four teams seeded in Pot 1 for the group draw of the 2020 AFC U23 Championship finals, together with hosts Thailand, defending champions Uzbekistan, and Qatar who finished in third place at the 2018 event.
Vietnam U23s are seeded in Pot 1 for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship group draw as the reigning runners-up.
As soon as the 16 qualifiers for the final tournament were confirmed on March 26, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) divided them into four seed pots in preparation for the group draw, scheduled to take place this October.
Accordingly, the second pot features the Republic of Korea, Japan, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Iraq.
China, Australia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia belong to the third seed pot, while the last seed pot consists of Syria, Iran, UAE and Bahrain.
The results of the qualification tournament.
With this classification method, many scenarios in the draw results could possibly happen, not excluding the possibility of Vietnam U23s being drawn into a group of death that could feature the RoK/Japan/Iraq (Pot 2), China (Pot 3) and Iran (Pot 4).
The 2020 AFC U-23 Championship finals will also act as the AFC qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic football event. The top three team of the tournament will qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan as the AFC representatives. As Japan have already qualified as the host team for next year’s Olympic Games, if they reach the semi-finals at the Asian U23 championship, the other semi-finalists are guaranteed qualification even before the phase commences.
