(HBO) – The Health Ministry held a ceremony to launch the National Action Month on Population and Vietnam Population Day (December 26) in Hoa Binh province on November 29.

Attending the event were leaders from the General Office for Population and Family Planning, ministries, agencies and mass organisations. Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Bui Van Cuu and a number of population collaborators from 11 districts and city were also present.

The National Action Month on Population and Vietnam Population Day 2018 took the theme "Caring for reproductive health of adolescents and youngsters for the future generations”. The Vietnamese adolescents and youths aged 10-24 (as defined by the World Health Organisation) account for over 22 percent of the population. They form a strong force playing a great role in national construction and defence. Therefore, their reproductive health is considered a priority in the Vietnam population and reproductive health strategy for the 2011-2020 period. The Health Ministry worked closely with agencies to hold activities caring for reproductive health of adolescents and youths which remains limited now.

According to the Maternal and Child Health Department, abortion in Vietnam remains high with 250,000 – 300,000 cases each year. Of 1,000 cases, 15 are in adolescents while there are 62 cases of unexpected pregnancy per 100 abortion cases in women aged 15-49. In order to respond to the National Action Month on Population and Vietnam Population Day, the ministry wished that departments and agencies would encourage walks of life to respond to the theme "Caring for reproductive health of adolescents, youths for future generations”, thereby ensuring that adolescents and youths receive comprehensive care and fully perform their rights and responsibilities.
