(HBO) - The Hoa Binh chapter of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) held a ceremony at Hoa Binh Phat Quang Pagoda on May 16 to celebrate the Lord Buddha’s birthday (Vesak).

The event was attended by National Assembly deputies of Hoa Binh province, representatives of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, departments and agencies, and nearly 2,000 local Buddhist monks, nuns and followers.

The Vesak festival is an important annual event held on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month to mark the birthday of the Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

The Lord Buddha, real name Siddhartha Gautama, was a crown prince who was the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Mayaof Sakyain the ancient India.

The Vesak has been a big festival of Vietnam for a long time. This year, it coincided with the VBS’s hosting of the 16th UN Day of Vesak celebration. This was also an occasion to encourage the upholding of Buddhist cultural traditions in national development and defence while demonstrating the Party and State’s religious policy. Therefore, it attracted a large number of participants, even non-Buddhists.

The ceremony in Hoa Binh featured rituals worshipping the Buddha, lighting candles to offer prayers, and a parade of floats around Hoa Binh city./.
