(HBO) – When coming to Tam hamlet in Hung Thi commune, Lac Thuy district of the northern province of Hoa Binh, we were impressed with clean and beautiful landscape that stretches from the start to the end of the hamlet, with both sides of the road filled with lush green trees.

Tam hamlet is located on Ho Chi Minh Road but local people are aware of following traffic rules by not encroaching roadsides to sell products. Additionally, all local people voluntarily join health insurance. They are noteworthy achievements of Tam hamlet since it has been recognised as the healthy and cultural village.

Nguyen Sy Hinh, head of Tam hamlet, disseminates criteria for a healthy and cultural village model to local people.

Since 2012, Tam hamlet has always maintained the cultural village title. The hamlet has 60 households and 218 people, with 93 percent of households recognised as cultural families. Understanding the importance of health, environment protection and joint economic development, local people have made numerous efforts for a long time and in 2016, the hamlet became the sole locality of Hung Thi commune recognised as a healthy and cultural village.

From that time, the hamlet has implemented many programmes benefitting local people such as setting up a lighting system across the hamlet. All households now have hygienic toilets and dust-holes. The hamlet has successfully formed self-managed groups, including a group responsible for environmental sanitation managed by the local woman’s union and another for security-order managed by war soldiers.

Local people were taught how to clean their houses and surrounding areas, keep water clean, and prevent hygiene-related diseases such as eye and digestive problems, worms and tapeworms, as well as mosquito-borne diseases, among others.

There were currently eight companies operating in Tam hamlet. To ensure waste from those companies does not affect the living environment, the hamlet assigned the self-managed women’s group on environment sanitation to disseminate proper waste treatment process for the companies, which warmly responded to this activity.

Local people are aware of health care for themselves and their families. All people in the hamlet join in health insurance and regular medical checkups while children are fully vaccinated.

Besides, local people have always exerted joint efforts to bolster economic development, as average income per capita of this year is higher than that of the previous year. Dinh Van Hung, head of the local war soldiers’ association, said that Tam hamlet has developed a beekeeping club comprising 10 households with 600 swarms of bees, raking in more than 1 billion VND a year in income. As many as 15 members of the association participate in the club, which also attracts 20 members of war soldiers’ associations of other hamlets. The club is ready to provide technical guidance for people who are interested in beekeeping.

Bui Van Duong, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hung Thi commune, said the healthy and cultural village model in Tam hamlet, in combination with the "all people stay united to build a cultural life” campaign, has made positive changes in health care and environment protection for local people./.
