like many other households in mountainous commune of Chi Dao in Lac Son district, the family of Bui Thi Son in Kho village once faced a shortage of clean water for their daily activities and had to take water from the stream in the nearby mountain, which was an unstable supply source.

In 2022, thanks to a soft loan of 12 million VND (489 USD) from the Vietnam Bank for Social Policy (VBSP)’s branch in Hoa Binh, Son’s family managed to drill a well and build their own water tank.

Son said that since then, her family have had a stable water supply source serving their daily life and breeding activities. "Previously, we had also accessed a soft loan for economic development, which was of great significance to our family,” said Son.

Son’s family is among more than 400 households in Chi Dao commune that have accessed policy credit for economic development. Dinh Cong Thai, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Chi Dao said that the VBSP’s diverse credit programmes have basically met the capital demand of poor and policy beneficiary households in the locality. However, the demand has still been high, he said.

Along with loans for sustainable development and water supply and rural sanitation and a number of new credit programmes, over the years, the VBSP branch in Hoa Binh has focused on providing loans for production, which has benefited thousands of local households who got capital to recover and promote production after COVID-19 pandemic.

Le Quoc Khanh, a local of Thong Nhat area in Hang Tram township of Yen Thuy said that thanks to the loans, his family has overcome difficulties from the COVID-19 pandemic and maintain their pomelo farms, pig breeding in association with honey bee farming, securing stable income.

Nguyen Minh Hung, Director of the Hoa Binh branch of the VBSP said that currently, total loan outstanding in the province is over 4.55 trillion VND with 18 credit programmes, which are provided to 99,876 households.
