UEFA have charged both Liverpool and Roma over crowd disturbances at their Champions League semi-final at Anfield in April, European football's disciplinary committee revealed on Tuesday (May 22).

Liverpool won the first leg 5-2 in a fiery atmosphere but were charged by UEFA on two further counts after fans set off flares and threw projectiles. A 53-year-old Liverpool supporter, Sean Cox, was attacked by Roman hooligans outside Anfield before the first leg, leaving him hospitalised in a coma where he remains in a serious condition.

* Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo topped the ESPN World Fame 100 list for a third straight year, pipping American basketball player Lebron James and long-term Argentine rival Lionel Messi. Real Madrid forward Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, was named the most popular athlete in the world on the basis of his social media following, endorsement deals and search score.

* Ukrainian police raided 35 football clubs and arrested at least one football referee on Tuesday in a massive operation against suspected match-fixing. The targeted clubs represent 67% of all professional clubs in the country and include five clubs in the top division - FC Zorya, Vorskla, Zirka, Olimpik and Olexandriya. The operation uncovered five criminal groups and registered 57 cases of match-fixing involving 328 people, officials said.

* Aston Villa and Fulham will be playing for a minimum 160 million pounds when they go head-to-head for a place in the Premier League at Wembley Stadium on Saturday in a match often described as the richest in world soccer. According to Deloitte Sports Business Group, the winner of the Championship playoff final for the third promotion place can finish bottom of the top-flight next season and still benefit from lucrative broadcasting deals and parachute payments.

* West Ham United have appointed former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager on a three-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday. The 64-year-old Chilean left Chinese Super League outfit Hebei China Fortune on Saturday and replaces David Moyes, who left the club last week after guiding them to a 13th-placed finish in the league.

* Juan Martin del Potro is waiting anxiously to see if a groin strain will force him out of the French Open, with the Argentine hoping the injury does not derail what has been one of his best starts to a season in years. Del Potro, whose early season form has lifted him to number six in the world, retired during his third round match at last week's Italian Open after picking up the injury.

* Serena Williams could still be seeded at this year's Wimbledon championships despite being snubbed by French Open organisers, the All England Club said on Tuesday. The American is expected to play at Roland Garros next week, where she has won the title three times, but without being seeded she could conceivably meet champion Jelena Ostapenko in the first round. The French Tennis Federation confirmed on Tuesday that its seedings would be based on the latest WTA rankings. Williams, who has won 23 grand slam singles titles, is ranked a lowly 453rd after returning to action this year following the birth of her daughter last September.

* Injury-plagued midfielder Santi Cazorla has left Arsenal after six seasons in north London as his contract has expired, the Premier League club has said. The 33-year-old has not played since October 2016 and underwent several operations, one resulting in a loss of eight centimetres from the tendon in his right ankle. He also nearly lost his foot after contracting gangrene. Cazorla made 180 appearances for Arsenal and scored 29 goals after joining the club from Spanish side Malaga in 2012. He helped the team capture two FA Cups - in 2014, when he scored and was man of the match, and 2015.

* Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar trained freely on Tuesday as Brazil began their preparations for the World Cup in Russia. Neymar has not played since suffering a cracked fifth metatarsal in his right foot in late February. He underwent surgery in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte on March 3 and is now in the final phase of his recovery, according to Brazil's medical staff.

* Cristiano Ronaldo made no secret of his ambition to win a fifth Champions League title when he spoke to the press on Tuesday during Real Madrid's open day ahead of the final against Liverpool. Ronaldo has already won one Champions League with Manchester United and three with Real Madrid and a fourth on Saturday would mean his club wins the tournament for the third consecutive year after beating Atletico Madrid in 2016 and Juventus in 2017.

* The Spanish Football Federation on Tuesday announced an extension of contract for Julen Lopetegui, who will manage the Spain national team until the end of the European Championships in 2020.
