* Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta said he was moving to Japan
and indicated he was signing for J-League side Vissel Kobe, posting a picture
of himself on social media with the club's chairman, Hiroshi Mikitani.
* Napoli appointed the much-traveled and hugely successful Carlo
Ancelotti as their new coach on Wednesday, handing him the job of trying to
end Juventus' dominance of Serie A. Ancelotti will replace Maurizio Sarri,
who led Napoli to two second-place and one third-place finish during his
three seasons in charge.
* Ukraine's state security service (SBU) on Wednesday warned of
a possible cyber attack on state bodies and private companies ahead of the
Champions League soccer final in Kiev on Saturday.
* The Swiss government asked parliament on Wednesday to approve
spending of up to 994 million Swiss francs (749 million pounds) on a bid to
host the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The Swiss city of Sion is one
of seven candidate sites, alongside Canada's Calgary, Austria's Graz,
Stockholm, Turkey's Erzurum, Japan's Sapporo and an Italian bid involving
Cortina d'Ampezzo, Milan and Turin.
* Veteran Malaysian shuttler Lee Chong Wei enacted his revenge
on world number one Viktor Axelsen by stunning the Dane in a two-game match
in their final group encounter of the Thomas Cup on Wednesday (May 23).
* UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin criticised his FIFA
counterpart Gianni Infantino's plans to create two new tournaments as "highly
cynical and ruthless mercantilism" and accused the global body of
selling the soul of the game. Infantino has proposed staging what would
effectively be a mini-World Cup. It would feature eight international teams
and take place every two years in addition to the traditional event.
* Australian Open semi-finalist Chung Hyeon has pulled out of
the French Open with a persistent ankle injury, the rising South Korean said
on Wednesday. Tipped as one of the few contenders capable of beating Rafa
Nadal at Roland Garros this year, Chung said in a tweet that he had also
withdrawn from this week's Lyon Open.
* The new head of USA Gymnastics apologised before Congress on
Wednesday (May 23) for the "despicable" sexual abuse of Olympic
gymnasts by disgraced team doctor Larry Nassar and pledged to make athlete
safety the top priority.
