In the snatch event, Kim Tuan registered a level of 128kg and successfully conquered it at his second lift.

Meanwhile, Om Yun Chol of the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) lifted 127kg in his first attempt. However, the 1991-born athlete failed to conquer the 131kg level in his next two attempts.

Despite failing to lift 132kg, Kim Tuan still topped the snatch category with a lift of 128kg, one kilogramme more than Om Yun Chol’s.

Another Vietnamese lifter, Tran Le Quoc Toan, followed in third place with three successful lifts of 118kg, 121kg and 123kg.

Regarding the clean and jerk event, Kim Tuan successfully lifted 152kg, but the DPRK opponent faced no difficulty in realising the level of 160kg, thus increasing his provisional total lift to 287kg.

Tuan registered the same level of weight in his second attempt in the hopes of beating Om Yun Chol to claim the gold medal. However, he was not successful in the remaining two lifts and had to settle for second place overall with a total lift of 280kg.

Tran Le Quoc Toan failed to secure a bronze medal for Vietnamese weightlifting, finishing fourth with a total lift of 271kg, just one kilogramme behind Bin Suwoto Wijoyo Surahmat of Indonesia.

Nguyen Huy Hoang brought home the first medal for Vietnamese swimming in Indonesia after being crowned the third fastest in the men’s 800m freestyle event.

Hoang clocked a time of 7:54.32, 5.96 and 1.31 seconds slower than the Chinese gold medalist, Sun Yang, and the Japanese silver medal winner, Takeda Shogo, respectively.

As of 10pm on August 20, Vietnam stood in 16th position in the provisional Asiad medal tally with one silver and three bronze medals. China remained on top with 15 gold medals, seven golds more than Japan and ten clear of the Republic of Korea.
