Wushu artist Pham Quoc Khanh and weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh clinched two more silver medals for Vietnam at the ongoing 2018 Asian Games (Asiad) in Indonesia following their second-place finishes in the men’s nanquan and nangun all-around event and the men’s 62kg category, respectively, on August 21.

Khanh finished as the runner-up in the nanquan competition on August 20 with 9.71 points, 0.04 points behind China’s Li Jingde.

In today’s nangun contest, the 28-year-old athlete delivered a brilliant display, scoring 9.71 points.

The leader of the nanquan event, Li Jingde, took everyone by surprise as he finished in 16th position in the nangun competition with 9.39 points, failing to make the overall podium.

However, Jingde’s slump did not do much for Khanh’s gold medal hopes, as Huang Junhua of Macau (China), who scored 9.7 in the nanquan contest, performed exceptionally to gain 9.73 points in the nangun category, thus claiming the top honour of the men’s nanquan and nangun all-around with a total of 19.43 points.

Vietnam’s Quoc Khanh was crowned the overall runner-up with 19.42 points, just 0.01 point behind Junhua and 0.02 points above the bronze medalist, Lee Yongmun from the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Earlier the same day, wushu added a bronze medal to Vietnam’s Asiad tally thanks to Duong Thuy Vi in the women’s jianshu and qiangshu all-around event.

Weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh accounted for Vietnam’s third silver medal in this year’s Asiad, as he finished second in the 62kg competition with a total lift of 299kg (snatch: 133kg, clean and jerk: 166kg), 12kg behind the gold medalist, Irawan Eko Yuli of the host country, Indonesia.

It was the second silver medal claimed by Vietnam’s weightlifting team in Indonesia, following Thach Kim Tuan’s in the men’s 56kg category on August 20.

Olympic champion Hoang Xuan Vinh did not live up to expectations as he failed to make the finals of the favourite 10m air pistol event. Vinh scored the same 579 points as Vladimir Issachenko of Kazakhstan and Lee Daemyung of the RoK, but was disqualified due to auxiliaries.

Vietnam hope to bring more medals home in the swimming tonight, as top female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and youngster Nguyen Huu Kim Son made their way through to the women’s 400m individual medley and men’s 400m freestyle events, respectively.

Vien was the fourth fastest in qualification with a time of 4:47.56, behind Yui Ohasi (Japan, 4:42.11), Min Zhou (China, 4:42.83), and Shimizu Sakiko (Japan, 4:45.88). The 2018 Asiad is considered a big opportunity for the Vietnamese star to realise her golden dream, as the 2014 gold medalist, Ye Shiwen, did not register to compete in the 2018 Asiad for personal reasons.
