Sharapova, the 2006 champion, had never lost a night session match in New York prior to her first Grand Slam meeting with Suarez Navarro, but the five-times Grand Slam champion paid the price for 38 unforced errors and won less than half of her first serve points while committing eight double faults. Sharapova succumbed in one hour and 31 minutes.

* Andy Murray will miss Britain's Davis Cup playoff tie against Uzbekistan in Glasgow to focus on his rehabilitation following hip surgery. The former world number one returned to best-of-five-set tennis for the first time in 14 months at the U.S. Open last week but, after hobbling to defeat in the second round, he decided to skip the Sept. 14-16 World Group playoff tie.

The 28-year-old has made 283 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 24 goals, since arriving from Sunderland in 2011.

* France will return to the football pitch for the first time since being crowned World Cup champions without their captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris when they face a Germany team looking to recover from their humiliating early exit in Russia. France coach Didier Deschamps said the injured Lloris would be replaced on Thursday by Montpellier's Benjamin Lecomte.

* Tottenham Hotspur will play all their Champions League group matches at Wembley as they continue to wait for the move into their new stadium, the Premier League club said on Monday. Spurs were initially scheduled to play their first game at the new 62,000-capacity White Hart Lane venue on Sep 15 against Liverpool but safety issues meant they switched the game along with the next home fixture to Wembley.

* The Danish Football Association (DBU) is looking for replacements for regular national team players for this month's matches against Slovakia and Wales after contract negotiations broke down.
