Hanoi FC’s ambition for scoring a ‘double title’ in the 2018 season ended up in smoke as they were held to a goalless draw by Becamex Binh Duong in the second leg semifinal of the 2018 National Cup football tournament on October 11.

Becamex Binh Duong (in blue) claim the National Cup final berth thanks to the away goal rule.

Inspired by the early and convincing V.League crown, Hanoi FC headed into the away match at Go Dau stadium with great psychological excitement, and proactively deployed attacks towards the host team.

However, on the opposite side, manager Tran Minh Chien’s players put up a solid defensive wall, causing multiple difficulties for the V.League champions’ offensive situations.

Both teams created several chances to score in the first 45 minutes, but none of them were successfully converted into an opener.

The second half continued to see Hanoi FC’s deadlock in breaking Binh Duong’s focused defence. Meanwhile, manager Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side could have conceded twice without keeper Van Cong’s brilliant saves of close-range strikes by Tien Linh and Tan Tai.

The 0-0 score remained unchanged until the final whistle. With both sides drawing 3-3 in the first leg at Hanoi FC’s home field, Becamex Binh Duong officially secured the remaining place in the 2018 National Cup final thanks to the rule of away goal.

Becamex Binh Duong will meet FLC Thanh Hoa in the National Cup title match at Tam Ky stadium, Quang Nam province, on October 15.
