The ongoing National Games 2018 continued to see superior performances by veteran athletes in their pet events on December 2, with a range of new records set in swimming and athletics.

Nguyen Thanh Ngung (Da Nang), who holds both the National record and the Games record, did not break his own mark but still won the gold medal in the 20 km racewalking yesterday.

Ngung’s teammate, Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc, also won a gold for Da Nang in women’s 20km racewalking. Bui The Anh won the men's marathon gold medal for the Army delegation. However, the best performance in the athletics events yesterday was the Games new record set up by Pham Thi Hong Le (Binh Dinh) in the women's marathon.

One National record and three Games records were smashes in the swimming pools last night. Ho Chi Minh City swimming team won a gold and also set the new record of 3:39’30 in 400m mixed relay (the old record was 3:47’01.

Le Nguyen Paul (An Giang) smashed the Games record in men’s 50 m freestyle, Pham Thanh Bao (Ben Tre) set a new record in men’s 100m breaststroke and Nguyen Huy Hoang (Quang Binh) took the new record in men’s 1,500m freestyle. Meanwhile, decorated swimmer Anh Vien won double golds for the Army team in women’s 50m and 400m freestyle.

In other events yesterday, shooter Nguyen Duy Hoang broke a record of men’s 50 m rifle three positions to win a gold medal for the Army team, while Hanoi won two gold medals in wrestling by Duong Hong Phuc (men’s 71kg) and Nguyen Ba Son (men’s 75kg).

Hanoi’s young golfers also won all four golds in four final events on Sunday, while Ho Chi Minh City cyclists dominated in the 152km road race claiming golds in both men's single and team events.
