Reigning V.League champions Hanoi FC made light work of newly promoted Viettel FC 2-0 in their capital derby at Hang Day Stadium, March 6, to extend their unbeaten run to three matches (two wins and one draw) in V.League 1-2019.

Hanoi FC players celebrate a goal against Viettel FC.

Under the crazy support of local fans, both teams proactively deployed attacks right from the first whistle, but it was the Hanoi FC side who were better on ball possession.

After a few dangerous situations, manager Chu Dinh Nghiem’s troops eventually opened the scoring in the 28thminute thanks to a close-range attempt by Pape Omar.

Inspired by the goal, Hanoi FC played with greater confidence and doubled their advantage only four minutes later. Captain Van Quyet penetrated into Viettel’s penalty area and assisted Oseni to slot one in to make it 2-0.

Hanoi FC had to play with just ten men on the field at the beginning of the second half, after the referee showed a direct red card to Van Quyet following his foul on Viettel’s Duc Chien.

However, Viettel failed to capitalise on their man advantage to pull back a goal during the remainder of the match.

The V.League newcomers were even awarded a penalty in the last minutes of play, but Joao Paulo could not beat goalkeeper Van Cong to earn a consolation for manager Lee Heung-sil’s side.

With the three points won from Viettel, Hanoi FC still hold on to second place in the V.League table with seven points, two points behind leaders Ho Chi Minh City FC, who achieved their third victory in a row by thrashing Nam Dinh FC 2-0 on March 5.

In another Wednesday match, Quang Ninh Coal FC pocketed their first win of the season after demolishing 2018 runners-up Thanh Hoa FC with three unanswered goals, thanks to Mac Hong Quan (37’) and Nguyen Hai Huy (39’, 87’).
