(HBO) - The Cycling Tournament "Back to Dien Bien Phu – People’s Army Newspaper Cup” officially kicked off in Hanoi on May 1.

The organising board presents individual prizes to outstanding cyclists in second stage.

The event was co-organised by the People’s Army Newspaper, the Vietnam Sports Administration, the Vietnam Bicycle and Sports Federation, the Mai Linh Group and relevant localities.

The first stage of the tournament started off around Hoan Kiem Lake with a total length of 40.8km. In the second stage, the cyclists departed from the Hanoi Flag Tower, then headed to Hoa Binh and finished at Mai Chau Town Gate (Hoa Binh), with a total length of 129km.

This year’s tournament attracted the participation of over 70 athletes from 12 teams, including the 10 strongest teams of Vietnam at present, and two foreign teams from the Philippines and Japan.

Concluding the second stage, the organising board honoured outstanding athletes. Huynh Thanh Tung from the People’s Army Newspaper won the first prize in the race along Hoa Binh city, the second and third prizes went to Nguyen Van Duong from Hanoi and Nguyen Pham Quoc Khang from Hoa Binh.

Phan Hoang Thai, representing the Domesco Dong Thap Pharmacy team, finished first in the second stage, followed by Quang Van Cuong from An Giang and Loic Desriac from Dong Nai.

Thai also took the polka dot king of the mountain jersey, while Cuong retained the yellow leader's jersey, and Loic Desriac won the green jersey.

On this occasion, the organising board granted 65 gifts to war veterans and policy beneficiaries in Mai Chau district, and a house for Bui Thi Tat who is the wife of martyr Bui Van Doi, Lac Son district. The Vietnam Study Promotion Fund – Dan Tri newspaper also presented scholarships worth 100 million VND to poor students with good academic performance in Hoa Binh province.

An exhibition including 21 photos featuring athletes in the previous tournaments was also held.
