Some sports have developed rapidly, obtaining a number of medals at different tourneys such as cycling, boxing, pencak silat, karate, and "day gay” (traditional pole pushing).

Cyclist Dinh Van Linh won two gold medals in the men’s individual cross country time trial and Olympic cross country events at the National Mountain Bike Championship 2017.

Aside from well-known and experienced athletes with many achievements such as Dinh Van Linh, Bui Van Tuan and Ha Cong Ky, young cyclists like Bui Thi Hue and Dinh Tuan Dat have also begun to make their names known with gold medals at junior tourneys. Some athletes have been summoned for the national team such as Dinh Van Linh, Bui Van Tuan, Nguyen Van Quang and Bui Thi Hue. Among them, Dinh Van Linh is highly valued by insiders and was presented with the National Master title.

Some other sports have also received much investment, which resulted in many medals at different competitions like athletics, karate, pencak silat and wrestling. In the first eight months of 2017, Hoa Binh selected and gave training to 70 athletes who took part in 14 regional and national tournaments. The athletes brought home 10 golds, six silvers and 14 bronze medals. Among the medals, cycling alone accounted for eight golds, three silvers and eight bronzes.

Local high-performance sports have made great strides and attained considerable achievements over the past years. Many of Hoa Binh sportsmen have been recognized as level-1 athletes or national masters. Some have been called to national teams and won medals at national and international championships, thus helping to raise Hoa Binh’s position in the national sport scene.

Dinh Danh Hanh, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said despite an array of difficulties, local high-performance sports have obtained significant results. Hoa Binh is considered a province full of potential for high-performance sports development.

The provincial People’s Committee has built a plan on developing local high-performance sports for 2017-2020, with a vision to 2030. The plan sets up concrete targets, tasks and solutions to develop high-performance sports in a sustainable and professional manner and gradually improve Hoa Binh’s ranking in national sports.

At the 8th National Sports and Physical Training Festival in 2018, the province will compete in six sports (cycling, weightlifting, athletics, boxing, pencak silat, and karate), targeting three gold, two silver and six bronze medals. It aims at the 40th position among 65 participating provinces, cities and sectors and a place in the top 10 of the 19 mountainous provinces participating in the festival./.
