"Hot girl” Duong Thuy Vi brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing 14th World Wushu Championships in Kazan, Russia on October 1, after overcoming 16 competitors to take the top honour in the women’s Qiangshu event.

Duong Thuy Vi is Vietnam's biggest gold medal hope at the 2017 World Wushu Championships.

She was marked with 9.64 points for her performance, just 0.01 point more than the silver medalist, Heeju Seo from the Republic of Korea. The bronze medal went to Japanese artist, Yamaguchi Keiko of Japan, with a score of 9.56.

Alongside Thuy Vi’s victory, the Vietnamese Wushu team captured an additional silver medal in the women’s Taiji Jian (Tai Chi Sword) competition, with Tran Thi Khanh Ly scoring 9.55 points.

China currently leads the medal standings with four golds, successively followed by Hong Kong (China), Vietnam and Chinese Taipei with one title each.

The World Wushu Championships 2017, which is taking place in Kazan from September 27 to October 3, is the third large international tournament for Vietnam’s Wushu team over the past two months, following the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 2017).

Vietnam’s "golden hopes” were pinned on Duong Thuy Vi and Hoang Thi Phuong Giang, who accounted for all the three gold medals for the country at the recent 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Vi winning two and Giang securing one.

At the previous competition in Jakarta, Indonesia, Vietnam only managed to finish in 14th place overall, with just four silver and three bronze medals. Previously, in 2013, the team secured three gold medals.
