Vietnam’s chess prodigy, Nguyen Anh Khoi, has completed a double of gold medals at the World Youth U14, U16, U18 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2017 in Greece, following his triumph in the Open U16 blitz chess category on October 30.

Nguyen Anh Khoi is the most impressive Vietnamese performer in this year's tournament.

Khoi took the overall crown with one game to spare. He recorded seven wins and one draw in the first eight matches, making the last-round clash against his Vietnamese compatriot, Do Vu Thien Nhi, a mere formality.

The ninth-game defeat to Nhi had no impact on Khoi’s aggregate rating, as he scored 7.5 points, enjoying a half-point lead over the Hungarian runner-up, K. Adam.

With this magnificent result, Anh Khoi has become the most impressive performer in this year’s tournament, holding both the rapid and blitz chess championship titles in his hand.

Concerning the U18 category, Le Minh Hoang from Vietnam finished in second place with 6.5 points, just half a point behind the Belarusian champion, K. Valiery.

Another Vietnamese representative, Tran Minh Thang, finished sixth overall with 5.5 points. He brilliantly ousted the top seed, L. Leon of Croatia, in the last round, thus indirectly lifting his compatriot, Le Minh Hoang, into second position. L. Leon ended up in fourth place with six points.

Earlier on October 29, Ngo Duc Tri and Nguyen Anh Khoi sealed the first two gold medals for Vietnam in spectacular style by winning the Open U14 and U16 rapid chess categories.

On aggregate, the Vietnamese team wrapped up their campaign at the World Youth U14, U16, U18 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2017 with a collection of three gold and two silver medals.
