Stick pushing at the Gau Tao Festival in 2024.

Recently, the Party Committee, People's Council, and People's Committee of two communes Hang Kia and Pa Co (Mai Chau district) organized the Gau Tao festival of the Mong ethnic group in 2024. In addition to the traditional cultural values of the Gau Tao festival, other activities exchanging some folk games and sports such as: throwing pao, playing tu lu, walking on stilts, pushing sticks... are attractive highlights that make the festival atmosphere more fun and exciting.

Not only the Gau Tao festival of the Mong people, but also most festivals are held in two parts, including the ceremony and the festival. In the festival, an indispensable activity is competing in traditional sports. Typically: Muong Ethnic Opening Ceremony, Tien Pagoda Festival, Xen Muong Festival... 

The common point of ethnic sports is that they do not require too much technique, easyly practice and play, regardless of gender or age, and gather a large number of people to participate, especially on Tet holidays. 

Besides the development of many sports and modern forms of entertainment, ethnic sports still have a strong vitality in life and play an important role in festivals every Tet holiday. 

Hoa Binh province has always paid attention to preserving and developing national sports. Crossbow shooting, tug of war, stick pushing tournaments are traditional sports tournaments, organized annually by the province, attracting the participation of typical cores of the national sports movement at the grassroots level.

At the Sports Congress at all levels in Hoa Binh province, national sports such as crossbow shooting, tug of war, and stick pushing are included in the competition program. In localities, people enthusiastically and actively practice sports.

There are 835 grassroots sports clubs in Hoa Binh province. In which, 64 club pushing clubs and 60 crossbow shooting clubs.

“Vovinam''s Impact of Hoa Binh Province”

Recently, the martial artists from our province left a lasting impression at the 2024 Northern Vovinam Championship organized by the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Nam Dinh Province in collaboration with the Sports Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) and the Vietnam Vovinam Federation. This championship has attracted the participation of over 300 athletes and coaches from 13 delegations representing various provinces and cities in the Northern region. At the National Championship for Stick Pushing and Tug of War in 2024 taking place in Dak Lak recently, a delegation of athletes from Hoa Binh province participated in both events. For stick pushing, they participated in 9 weight categories and won 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. Notably, the two young athletes who were both born in 2006 are the children of Van Son commune (Lac Son) and have contributed a lot to the province's competition achievements.

Thuong Coc commune has been spreading the spirit of physical training and sports

In Thuong Coc commune (Lac Son), there are over 9,000 people, living in 14 hamlets. Recently, the commune has increased propaganda for the people so that they practice physical training and sports to improve health; Each person chooses a suitable sport and type of exercise, creating the healthy living habit.
