Du Sang Commune (Kim Boi District) has over 80% of its population belonging to Muong ethnic group. In recent years, along with the economic and social development, the communal People's Committee has focused on preserving and promoting the traditional ethnic sports. Among these, crossbow shooting has consistently attracted a large number of participants. The commune has established a crossbow shooting club with over 20 members.
Mr. Bui Chien Dich, the head of the crossbow shooting club in Du Sang Commune (Kim Boi), is a prominent athlete in this sport.
Despite his old age, Mr. Bui Chien Dich, from Sang Moi Hamlet, continues to dedicate time to practice crossbow shooting. Recently, in preparation for a crossbow shooting exchange event during the National Day celebration on September 2nd with Doc Lap Commune (Hoa Binh City), Mr. Dich has been rigorously training. This event brings together the skilled crossbow shooters from the two communes for a friendly competition, contributing to the promotion of the traditional sports in the area and encouraging the younger generations to participate in competitions and training. Mr. Dich currently serves as the head of the commune’s crossbow shooting club.
Visiting his small home, one can see that the medals proudly displayed in the living room cabinet are the testament to his dedication to the sport over the years. Mr. Dich says, "Founded in 2020, Du Sang commune’s Crossbow Shooting Club consistently maintains regular practice sessions with over 20 members. The members come from different backgrounds and age groups but they all share a love for crossbow shooting. We also regularly participate in competitions and exchanges. The club holds monthly meetings and operates according to the established regulations. Each year, we organize 7 to 8 exchanges with the crossbow shooting clubs from Tan Lac and Lac San districts, giving the members the opportunity to compete, gain experience, and improve their skills”.
For crossbow shooting, all components of the crossbow, such as the arrows, bow, and bowstring, must be handcrafted. This requires the significant time and effort, from making the crossbow to practicing, as well as contributing financially to maintain the club. However, all the members are enthusiastic and actively participate because they are passionate about the sport and they are proud to contribute to preserving and promoting this traditional sports.
As a standout athlete in Du Sang Commune for crossbow shooting, Mr. Dich has participated in numerous competitions at the levels of the commune, district, and province, achieving many high results. In 2014, he won a silver medal and a bronze medal at the district level; in 2015, he won two gold medals and two silver medals at the district level; and in 2007, he won a silver medal at the provincial level. Besides Mr. Dịch, there are many other skilled and passionate individuals in the crossbow shooting club. With the enthusiasm and dedication of each member, Du Sang Commune’s Crossbow Shooting Club has grown stronger, attracting many young people to join. This has been contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional value of the sports, helping the local sports movement more and more develop. To foster the practice and competition of crossbow shooting, the communal People's Committee has prioritized organizing competitions from the grassroots level, promoting the role of the club as the core group in passing down this traditional ethnic sports to the younger generation.
Mr. Dang The Quang, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Du Sang commune, has emphasized that practicing and competing in crossbow shooting not only helps improve physical fitness and health, but it also enriches the cultural and spiritual life of the community, while contributing to the preservation and promotion of the traditional cultural values of the local ethnic groups. Additionally, the commune encourages the expansion of the ports clubs and interest groups and promotes the organization of crossbow shooting competitions during the major local holidays.
