This is the first visit of a Lao leader to Myanmar since the visit made by President Bounnhang Vorachith in August 2016.

In the 2016 visit, both sides agreed to jointly manage their first friendship bridge spanning the Mekong River, which was inaugurated in May 2015. They were also committed to boosting bilateral engagements in rural development, tourism, poverty alleviation, education, forestry, and animal farming.

Sharing a 230-km borderline, Laos and Myanmar established diplomatic relations in July 1955, with both countries joining the ASEAN in 1997.

They have worked to crack down on drug trafficking rings and will expand cooperation in law-making.
