Speaking to thousands of garment workers in Phnom Penh, Hun Sen said King Norodom Sihamoni will chair the opening session of the new parliament on September 19. Then the new parliament will vote for the formation of a new government on the following day.

On September 20 morning, the new government will be formed, and a sworn-in ceremony will be held in the afternoon, and on September 21, the first new Cabinet meeting will be convened, he stated.

He expressed his gratitude to the people for participating in the democratic process and voting for political parties they liked. He also thanked the people for their continued support for the ruling party.

Twenty political parties contested in the Sunday's general election. Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) announced on July 30 that the CPP won the most votes in the general election on July 29, with more than 4.8 million or 76.78 percent.

The CPP was followed by the National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful, and Cooperative Cambodia (FUNCINPEC) with 373,500 votes (5.88 percent); the League for Democracy Party (LDP) with 308,000 votes (4.86 percent); and the Khmer Will Party (KWP) with 212,000 votes (3.35 percent).

The remaining political parties received from more than 8,000 to 100,000 votes, or somewhere between 0.14 and 1.56 percent.

The NEC plans to announce preliminary results on August 11 and the official results on August 15 so long as there are no complaints raised.
