Commercial eel products of the Thanh Cong Agro-forestry and General Trading Co. Ltd., based in Doan Ket Commune, Yen Thuy District, were certified as a 3-star One Commune One Product (OCOP) item last year. This recognition has secured the company’s position in the market and marked a new economic development direction for the locality.

Commercial eel products of the Thanh Cong Agro-forestry and General Trading Co. Ltd meet 3-star OCOP standards last year.

Reflecting on his journey into eel farming, Bui Van Cong, the "father” of the model, recalled the challenges of traveling across the country to learn farming techniques.

Through various information sources, Cong discovered that eels are highly nutritious and economically valuable livestock.

"During experimental trials starting in 2018, I realised the model didn’t require advanced technical expertise, demanded minimal care, and involved low risks,” he shared.

Encouraged by the promising results of the pilot phase, Cong and his team decided to implement a mud-free eel farming model. They then expanded their production scale and diversified their commercial eel products to meet OCOP criteria.

Mud-free eel farming relies on a clean and stable water source for periodic replacement. Cong sources water from drilled wells, treating it in a container for 6–8 hours before pumping it into the farming tanks.

selecting high-quality eel seeds is equally important. Baby eels must be healthy and fed a balanced diet enriched with vitamins and minerals to prevent diseases. Herbal remedies, such as guava and nhoi (Bischofia javanica) leaves, are used for fungal treatment. These are mixed into the feed twice weekly to prevent intestinal diseases.

Thanh Cong Agro-forestry and General Trading Co. Ltd. provides technical support to six breeding farms across the province and nearby regions, including Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, and Nam Dinh. The company supplies over 500 million baby eels annually to more than 400 farming households.

So far, over 10 households have adopted and expanded the eel farming model. Since the beginning of this year, the company has supplied 700,000 baby eels to local farmers, yielding profits of over 300 million VND (11,810 USD) after expenses.

With its expertise in mud-free eel farming technology, the company consistently delivers fresh, high-quality eels to the market, earning the trust of consumers.

Since October 2023, the company has invested in building workshops and acquiring equipment to enhance its farming processes. These efforts aim to ensure a stable supply and demand balance, with a target of producing two tonnes of commercial eels monthly for consumers.

To expand its market presence, the company has ramped up its marketing efforts by promoting products on e-commerce platforms and leveraging social media channels such as Facebook, Zalo, and TikTok to reach more customers.

Bui Thi Thanh Binh, Vice Chairman of the Doan Ket Commune People’s Committee, emphasised the importance of improving production processes and enhancing product quality to strengthen the company’s market position. She also highlighted the need for increased advertising and expanded market linkages.

To support farming households, preferential loans should be made available, along with the adoption of advanced scientific and technical knowledge. These measures will enhance the quality and efficiency of farming, contributing to local socio-economic development, she added.
