The central province of Thua Thien Hue is planning to upgrade the Phu Bai International Airport, located in Huong Thuy town, aiming to raise its passenger-serving capacity to 3-3.5 million annually by 2020, and 6.5-7 million annually by 2025.

Phu Bai International Airport is currently capable of handling only 1.5 million passengers per year.

Accordingly, the upgrade work will cost approximately VND5.56 trillion (US$244.64 million), with a focus on expanding the categories of terminals, runways, aprons, and other infrastructure.

The area of land requiring clearance in service of the airport expansion project will be more than 153 hectares, including 24.44 hectares in Phu Bai ward, nearly 20.8 hectares in Thuy Phu commune, and over 108 hectares in Thuy Tan commune.

Phu Bai International Airport is currently capable of handling only 1.5 million passengers per year and is always overloaded.

In 2017, the number of passengers served by the airport reached 1.75 million, posting an annual average passenger growth rate of 15%.

Phu Bai International Airport holds a significant position in the economic and socio-cultural development strategy of Thua Thien Hue province and the North Central region as a whole. It serves as a bridge connecting the regions across the country and around the world, playing a crucial role in bringing the tourism potential of the province and the Central region into full play.
