(HBO) - Before the terrible effects of herbicides in agricultural production on the environment and people's lives, many communes in Da Bac district have said "No” to this chemical.

People in Son Phu village, Cao Son commune (Da Bac) are diluting the herbicide before spraying.

It is worth mentioning that when recognizing herbicides' terrible impact on the living environment, committees and authorities of many communes in the district has announced the documents and instructions to prohibit the use of herbicides in agricultural production in the locality. Even this has been included in the village conventions, regulations of the village with strict sanctions, for example, in the communes of Dong Chum, Muong Chieng, Dong Nghe, Suoi Nanh.

Speaking with us, Mr. Xa Van Hung, the Chairman of People's Committee of Muong Chieng Commune said that the use of herbicides in local agricultural production is mainly concentrated in Ke village. There are 72 households in the village and 100% of the households grow maize with a total area of 130 hectares. Previously, in the production process, people use a large amount of herbicides annually. The abuse of this drug mainly causes impacts and influences on the environment, land and human health when most of the families in the village are affected and their health becomes weaker. Facing with that situation, the Party Committee and the local authorities have strengthened the propaganda to the people for not using herbicides. For the highly effective propaganda, Ke village has put this content into the village’s convention. Accordingly, the sanctioning fine is from VND 500,000 to VND 2 million for households who stills use herbicides in production. This was agreed by all households in the village.

like Muong Chieng, up to now, after being propagated and mobilized, 100% of the households in Dong Chum have come back with clean farming. This is because the commune has helped people see the dangers of using herbicides. 100% of the households in the commune agreed to sign in the commitment not to use herbicides in production. At the same time, they unanimously agreed not to use herbicides in the village’s conventions and regulations. According to the convention, if a family household is found to use herbicides, a fine of between VND 500,000 and VND1 million will be imposed and not be recognized as the cultural family of the village. The mobilization of people not using herbicides has made Dong Chum become the first locality of Da Bac district and the province successfully implemented the campaign "Say no to herbicides" with the high consensus and agreement from the Party Committee, government to each household.
