(HBO) – After four years of implementation,the Japanese-funded VIE070 Project to support disadvantaged senior citizens through the Intergenerational Self-Help Club (ISHC) model has helped improve the living conditions of the elderly. Meanwhile, it has also helped reduce their vulnerability in income and health. In the 2020-2025 period, it will cover four districts and cities with about 3,500 people benefited.

In October, a Intergenerational Self-Help Club was launched in Thieu Nau village, Thu Phong commune of Cao Phong district with 53 members, drawing great attention of locals.

Bui Thi Mam, a member of the club, said that by joining the club, she can meet friends and become much happier. "I also participate in self-care actvities, thereby improving my income as well as my life quality a lot,” she said.

The project has been implemented in six provinces and cities, including Hoa Binh with investment of 10.5 billion VND each.

In Hoa Binh, it covers Cao Phong, Kim Boi and Luong Son districts, and Hoa Binh city with four components of forming and improving the operational capacity of the Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs; ensuring incomes of the elderly; giving community-based health and social care; and project managing, supervising and evaluating, and model sharing. Currently, each Intergenerational Self-Help Club has had 50-70 members at different ages, most of whom are older persons, women, and poor people. In 2025, the project targets of at least 50 percent of total communes, wards and townships having Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs, along with the formation of at least 75 new clubs. Each city and district is expected to have 7-8 clubs each year from now to 2025.

At the same time, the provincial Association of the Elderly will actively coordinate with relevant departments, agencies and organisations to strengthen communications, implement health care activities for the elderly, and expand the model of Intergenerational Self-Help Club. Alongside, cultural, sport and art activities will be held for the elderly.

Bui Tuan Hai, Chairman of the provincial Association of the Elderly said that so far, 10 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs have been lauched. In the time to come, the association will continue to work closely with the project to conduct practical activities to care for the elderly, he said./.

Progress in ethnic minority education

In the 2024 - 2025 school year, the entire Hoa Binh provincial education sector includes 520 educational institutions and schools. Among them are 13 ethnic boarding schools with 153 classes and 4,487 students. Four of these schools have met national standards, reaching 30.7 percent.
