(HBO) – Hoa Binh has focused on strengthening communications to enhance public awareness of gender equality and encourage local residents to implement measures to control gender imbalance at birth.
Along with the effective implementation of the population and family planning programme and a project on reducing gender imbalance at birth, the province has developed effective models in the work, contributing to enhancing population quality.
As a result, Hoa Binh has seen the sex ratio at birth falling through years from 113.9 boys over 100 girls in 2018 to 111.6 boys over 100 girls in 2021.
Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Vice Director of the Sub-Department of Population and Family Planning of Hoa Binh, said that although the province's imbalance at birth has decreased, it is still higher than the national average, while the rate of families having at least three children remains high and is on the rise.
Along with encouraging families to have only two children, the sub-department has strengthened communications to enhance public awareness of gender equality and improve the status of girls, she said.
This year, in response to the International Day of the Girl (October 11), the sub-department has issued a dispatch guiding local agencies, organisations and the healthcare system to actively implement communications activities to call for actions to minimise gender imbalance at birth, prevent fetal sex selection, and eliminate gender discrimination.
The efforts aim to generally change the awareness and gender stereotype, enhance the role of women and girls in families, thus bringing sex ratio at birth to a more naturally balanced level.
