(HBO) – Unemployment insurance is viewed as a "lifebuoy” to help workers in a difficult time, especially when they are seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It does not only offset a part of their income loss but also supports the workers in vocational training and finding a job. The number of applications for unemployment insurance submitted at the provincial Employment Service Centre was on the rise in the first quarter of this year.

Officials of the provincial Employment Service Centre offer consultants and introduce jobs to workers who apply for unemployment benefits.

Up to now, Bui Van Khuong, 33, Quyet Thang hamlet, Lac Luong commune (Yen Thuy) has received unemployment benefits for four consecutive months with an allowance of more than 2.13 million VND (91 USD) per month which equals 60% of the average of last six months’ wages.

Khuong said that he paid unemployment insurance premiums for 84 months while working as a salesman for Nguyen Minh Company. Thus, he got 7-month unemployment benefits. The monthly allowance has helped him stabilise his life when he looks for a suitable job.

Hoang Thi Luyen, 40, who resides in Luong Son district’s Cao Son commune, has just received the decision on unemployment benefits issued by the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs. She once worked for Esquel Garment Co Ltd in Luong Son Industrial Park. She will receive unemployment benefits from January 30 to August 29 with an allowance of 2.6 million VND a month.

In the first months of this year, some businesses were forced to reduce their number of employees due to difficulties in securing orders. The number of workers who lost their jobs in the province also increased.

The provincial Employment Service Centre and four offices in Lac Thuy, Yen Thuy, Lac Son and Luong Son district receive dozens of applications for unemployment benefits a day.

It is estimated that by mid-April, nearly 900 workers in the province filed their application for unemployment insurance benefits. Last year, the province received 6,273 dossiers.

According to Vu Manh Hung, the centre’s director, unemployment insurance protects workers against major income losses during spells of unemployment while meeting their basic needs. Workers who join unemployment insurance have the opportunity to learn vocational skills and find suitable jobs so that they can enter the labour market.

Coming to the centre, those who file applications for unemployment insurance benefits will receive in-depth consultation. It will also help the unemployed find new jobs by introducing labour export programmes and employment opportunities to them. Last year, 139 people received training from the unemployment insurance fund with a maximum tuition fee support of 1.5 million VND.

The centre is promoting dissemination and giving advice relating to criteria, procedures and unemployment insurance benefits in various forms such as seminars, conferences, website, newspapers, radio, helping employees and employers gain a better understanding, thereby, contributing to bringing policies of the Party and State into practice, improving social security and quality of workers' lives./.
