The titles were awarded at the ASEAN Travel Forum 2018 in Bangkok and are valid for the three years from 2018 to 2020.

According to Nguyen Van Phuc, deputy director of the Thua Thien-Hue Department of Tourism, Hue has been recognised for its clean streets, good waste management, abundant green spaces, and good urban security for tourists.

Meanwhile, the Pilgrimage Village won the honour for its environmentally friendly operational activities, use of green products, efficient use of energy and water, good noise control, and waste management.

Previously in 2017, the Pilgrimage Village received the Accommodation Award for Sustainable Successes by Chamäleon Reisen GmbH, a German travel agency.

Tourism is becoming a leading economic sector for Thua Thien-Hue province, which aims to welcome 4-4.2 million visitors in 2018, with foreign tourists accounting for 40-45%.

The province’s tourism revenues are expected to rise by 15% over 2017 to more than VND4 trillion (US$176 million) this year.
