(HBO) – Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hoa Binh province Nguyen Van Quang has held a working session with the provincial Department of Education and Training on preparations for the 2017-2018 academic year. Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Bui Van Cuu also attended the event.

Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hoa Binh province Nguyen Van Quang speaks at the working session.

According to the Department of Education and Training, the province has nearly 8,650 classrooms at all levels; 83.7 percent of which are solid, 9.8 percent are semi-solid and 4.4 percent are in bad condition. There are 262 subject-based classrooms, 215 informatics practice rooms and 68 others for foreign language learning. Hoa Binh now has 275 national-standard schools, including 71 kindergartens, 118 primary schools, 77 secondary schools and 7 high schools.

To prepare for the new school year, the department started enrolling students during the summer vacation and recruited eligible children for first-grade classes as instructed by the Ministry of Education and Training. As a result, 18,135 children aged 5 were enrolled for pre-school education and 15,586 children aged 6 have applied for first grade classes.

The department provided professional training on educational innovation and positive teaching methods for thousands of teachers and educational managers during the last summer. It also invested about 45 billion VND (almost 2 million USD) in repairing and renovating classrooms, working rooms and school yards.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Bui Van Cuu asked the Department of Education and Training to work closely with the Department of Home Affairs to evaluate the results of school merging.

He pointed to the low percentage of teachers who are members of the Communist Party, only accounting for over 50 percent of the total number of teachers. In addition, Cuu urged the department to improve operations of community-based learning centres and prompted the province’s Centre for Continuing Education to well perform its functions.

Concluding the working session, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Quang agreed on nine basic groups of tasks and five key solutions proposed by the Department of Education and Training for the 2017-2018 school year.

The department should clarify the solutions to better fulfill the tasks, he said, adding that it needs to continue reviewing the performance of local schools, particularly school merging and recruitment. Quang asked the department to improve qualifications of teachers and step up the application of Information Technology (IT) in the sector.

The chairman assigned the Department of Planning and Investment, and the Department of Finance to study proposals on building facilities at schools and then make recommendations to the provincial People’s Committee for approval. He suggested suspending the merging of schools which are located far from each other while requesting the Department of Home Affairs to guide local authorities on the required procedures for recruiting teachers.
