Farmers in Vu Binh commune, Lac Son district build red-flesh dragon fruit farming model which brings high economic efficiency.

Previously, in agricultural production, rice and corn were almost key crops in fields. Breakthrough only began when a scheme on changing the structure of plants and animals was launched. Notably in Van Nghia commune, farmers switched from growing rice to bitter melon, cucumber and pumpkin. From a one-crop field, farmers planted seeds for two crops, or even three crops to improve economic efficiency. They also combined production and consumption to ensure stable and sustainable "output”. The model has been expanded with 50ha and an average annual income of 300-400 million VND per ha.

Through 3-4 years, the area of citrus cultivation reached nearly 850ha, mostly Canh oranges in Thuong Coc, Huong Nhuong, Van Son, Tan My, An Nghia and Vu Binh communes which have been available for harvest. Outstanding models covering 5-10ha are those belonging to Nguyen Van Tu in La Van Cau hamlet, Thuong Coc commune; Nguyen Van Tho in Ba Ruong hamlet, My Thanh commune and Bui Van Viet in Coi hamlet in Vu Binh commune.

Apart from strengths in land and workforce for agriculture, the district has also been known for its tourism potential with tourist attractions such as Mu fall in Tu Do commune, Thung hill in Quy Hoa commune and Bai Bui field in Ngoc Lau commune. The special cultural identity associated with festivals, customs, rituals, historical and cultural relic sites has been maintained and upheld. During the 2015-2020 period, the number of visitors kept growing. Several investors surveyed and chose them as ideal destinations for resort projects.

In addition to agriculture, the district also attached importance to industry-handicrafts, trade and services. Via creating favourable conditions in terms of mechanisms, policies and administrative reform, the district has drawn many firms in and outside the province. Apparel, electronic and tourism companies generated jobs and stable income for thousands of workers, thereby increasing local budget.

Vice Secretary of the district Party Committee Bui Van Kia affirmed that efforts of the entire political system, economic sectors and people to realise the resolution have carried forward local economy. Last year, the structure of agro-forestry accounted for 36.6 percent, industry 29 percent, services 34.4 percent. The production growth averaged 10.09 percent. The rate of poor households was reduced to 11.87 percent, down 3.28 percent from 2019.

The district Party Committee’s Resolution No.01-NQ/HU dated December 14 set the goal of achieving a production growth of 12 percent and an average income per capita of 50 million VND this year. A number of measures will be adopted in a synchronous and drastic manner, including developing high-tech agriculture, switching to new varieties with high economic value, speeding up the building of "Lac Son orange” trademark, maintaining the "Lac Son chicken” trademark, popularising tourism potential, creating conditions for enterprises to invest in tourism and developing post-harvest farm produce processing plants./.
