The 1.5 hectares of custard apples with 1,100 trees of Dao Van Hung in Dong Bong village yield about 15 tonnes of the fruit valued at 500-600 million VND each year. Hung said thanks to new farming methods, the productivity has increased 2-3 times as compared with traditional ones.

According to Vice Chairman of the communal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Han, Dong Tam has replaced ineffective crops with custard apples, contributing to reducing poverty, raising people’s living standards, and spurring local socio- economic development. The commune is now home to 50 hectares of custard apples cultivated by more than 40 households, mainly in Dong Bong and Dai Dong villages, he said, adding that apart from the main season, there is another unseasonal.

The official noted that Dong Tam custard apple has been rated three-star under the "One Commune-One Product” (OCOP) programme. More importantly, the recognition has helped to change the mindset and awareness of farmers in cultivation, and raise the efficiency of farming land in the locality.
