HBO – In the run up to the lunar New Year (Tet) festival, Tan Lac red grapefruit becomes more and more attractive. Thanks to locals’ caring efforts, the trees are fruitful, well serving market demand during the biggest festival of Vietnamese people.

Tan Lac red-flesh grapefruit, which has received collective mark and been planted under VietGAP standards, wins consumers’ confidence.

One of the biggest advantages of Tan Lac grapefruit is that this fruit’s harvest time falls on the lunar New Year (Tet) festival. Therefore, with its high quality, this fruit is always in the "sold-out” status and sold at good prices, especially during Tet as the fruit received the "Tan Lac red-flesh grapefruit” collective mark from the Ministry of Science and Technology’s National Office of Intellectual Property in late November 2017. Thanks to the recognition, many opportunities have been opened up for the most typical product of Tan Lac district, raising the competitiveness of this fruit on markets inside and outside the province. Moreover, many people visit grapefruit orchards in Tan Lac to enjoy the fruit, while many potential partners come to meet local farmers to sign consumption contracts.

Pham Khac Thuong, head of the Tan Lac Red Grapefruit Production, Processing and Consumption Cooperative, said that "this is the first year we have sold this kind of product on the market, but received good feedbacks from our partners, including supermarkets and prestigious retailers nationwide. The cooperative currently has around 30ha of fruits, mainly red grapefruit, of which 7ha are in harvest time. All grapefruit trees are planted and cared under VietGAP standards. In addition, the cooperative invested in a technology chain to clean, classify, pack and preserve grapefruits following VietGAP standards to provide products with the best quality and meeting the market’s strict requirements during this Tet festival.

With around 350 ha in harvest time, red grapefruit has brought about a cheerful and well-off Tet to hundreds of local households. According to assessments of the district People’s Committee, local households can earn around 700 million VND (30,870 USD) per ha, even over 1 billion VND per ha. Thanks to high economic values, the district has invested in red-flesh and green grapefruits which are suitable for the locality’s cultivation conditions, resistant to insects, and have high productivity, quality and economic efficiency. Especially, the fruit’s harvest time falls on the Tet festival, which meets market requirements and helps it more competitive than other farm produce.

The total area of grapefruit in Tan Lac district increases from nearly 110ha in 2013 to 992ha at present, mainly in communes along national highways 12B and 6, notably Dong Lai, Thanh Hoi, Tu Ne, Ngoc My, Quy Hau, Man Duc and Phong Phu./.
