The national power utility EVN has started work on three projects to create a 500kV power transmission line between Vung Ang in Ha Tinh province and Pleiku in Gia Lai province.

It is expected to enhance the national power transmission infrastructure and the supply capacity for the southern region.

Running over 740 kilometres in total, through Da Nang and the provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Gia Lai, the three projects will cost nearly 12 trillion (US$516 million).

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on December 18, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung stated that the southern region accounts for 47% of the country’s total power consumption but its generation capacity equates to only 35%.

As a result, the region will likely face power shortages in the near future due to the delay of several generation projects, while the current lines to transmit power from the north and central regions are fully loaded and even overloaded at times.

Therefore, the transmission line from Vung Ang to Pleiku is extremely urgent, Dung emphasised, adding that, once completed, the line will ensure sufficient electricity for the southern region’s production and household use.

Deputy PM Dung stated that given that this is a technically complex project constructed in difficult conditions, he asked the relevant parties to promptly deal with the obstacles so that the construction progress will not be affected.

The construction time of these three projects is estimated at 20 months and they are scheduled to be put into operation by mid-2020.
