The model of raising chicken with herbs of Mr. Vu Tien Dung’s family in Binh Ly hamlet, Tu Ly commune (Da Bac) has brought high economic efficiency, and a lot of people have visited and studied.
The model was deployed in Tu Ly and Cao Son communes with the scale of nearly 2,000 chickens. This is Lac Thuy Ri chicken with the outstanding advantages in terms of quality and delicious meat, and good adaptation to the local grazing conditions. The district’s Centre of the Agricultural Service has implemented a model for 5 households in 2 communes, each household has raised 300-500 chickens. The households participating in the model have been supported with 100% of breeding stock, vaccines, disinfectants and 41% of supplies and feed (concentrated bran, corn flour, rice bran). The model applies the semi-grazing method with the good implementation of the biosecurity measures. In particular, chickens are fed with mixed herbal feed at the rate of 0.2 - 0.3% of the feed amount. Thereby, it helps to enhance the resistance, good growth and development, and they are free from diseases, which significantly reduces the use of antibiotics.
After 5 months of raising, the chickens gained an average weight of 1.7 kg/head, and the survival rate reached 96%. The chicken's food is the locally grown corn, which is mixed with herbs, having the effect of preventing a number of common diseases. The herbs are processed by the farmers themselves from garlic, turmeric, ginger, locust, licorice, guava leaves, myrtle leaves, myrtle, guava leaves... Besides, the Centre of the Agricultural Service has instructed the households not to use the banned substances and antibiotics. In addition to crushing the herbs to mix into food, the households have also been instructed to feed directly, pound and mix with water for drinking, concentrate the liquid for drinking, soak in ginger and garlic wine. The aims of these are to improve the resistance, to limit disease and to solve the unpleasant odors in the breeding process.
As a household participating in the implementation of the model, Mr. Vu Tien Dung from Binh Ly hamlet (Tu Ly commune) says: We see this as a direction bringing high efficiency, high economic value that can be replicated and developed stably and sustainably. The success of the model will help the people change their perception and habits of the traditional livestock raising to the intensive raising method, applying the scientific and technical advances to animal husbandry. The model is a place for the farmers in the region to visit, study and replicate.
According to Mr. Ban Van Xuan, the Vice Chairman of Cao Son People's Committee, the model has brought the practical efficiency in terms of economy as well as environment, and it is a new direction in chicken raising in particular, poultry raising in general, especially in the context that consumers are increasingly concerned about the quality and safety of the products. The model has harmoniously used the locally available livestock resources, the logging also reduces the stench, and clean chicken manure is effectively used in farming.
Ms. Quach Thi Khieu, the Director of Da Bac Centre of the Agricultural Service says: Implementing the model helps strengthen the linkages between the livestock households and increase the production value. At the same time, during the raisig process, the farmers strengthen the mutual supervision, monitor the process of taking care of their products so that they can avoid bringing the products elsewhere to reduce their product's reputation. The synchronous application of science and technology on a large number of livestock helps improve productivity and the product quality is uniform, directing to help the groups of farmers establish the production groups and cooperatives to monitor and find outputs and markets for the products. Thereby, it hepls increase the ability to link business with the consumption market.
With the initial promising signs, the OCOP model of raising chickens using herbs is considered a positive direction in the economic development for the households in the district. In addition to the expectation of raising the income, the model opens up new directions, creates the unique local products, contributes to improving the economic value, fulfills the income criteria and actively contributes to the district’s economic development in the process of building new rural areas.
