Transport infrastructure gives a new facelift to Bac Phong commune, Cao Phong district.

With the State support, Bac Phong commune met criteria for new-style rural area in 2021 after years of efforts.

Chairman of the communal People’s Committee Khuong Xuan Lich said the locality has basically converted the inefficient rice land to sugarcane, and hill garden land to citrus farming. It attached importance to the development of trade, services and handicrafts. Transport, irrigation, school, medical station infrastructure, cultural institutions, residential houses were harmonised according to the planning. In 2021, per capita income reached 40 million VND (1,700 USD) while the poverty rate decreased to 2.78%.

At present, each commune meets 16.67 criteria on average. Five communes meet 19 criteria, namely Dung Phong, Thu Phong, Nam Phong, Tay Phong and Bac Phong.

The district focused on production development in combination with agricultural restructuring, changes of rural economic structure, and income improvement for residents. It is home to many One Commune, One Product (OCOP) products such as fermented orange juice, fresh orange of Ha Phong cooperative, 3T Farm orange meeting four-star standards, orange jam, orange juice, honey peach lemon tea, orange wine of Ha Phong cooperative, and Thach Yen spice seeds meeting three-star standards.

Apart from the above achievements, the district still meets difficulties in building new-style rural areas such as limited investment capital for the National Target Programme on New Rural Development, unstable prices of farm produce that makes it hard to improve farmers’ income, and uneven progress in new rural development in communes, and several modest targets and criteria.

Head of the district office of agriculture and rural development Bui Van Dan said during 2021-2025, Cao Phong strives to keep three communes and have another meet enhanced criteria for the status, two communes meeting criteria for exemplary new-style development, and all communes build model new rural areas and gardens. Binh Thanh and Hop Phong communes are expected to achieve the status this year, followed by Thung Nai in 2023, Thach Yen in 2024 and Cao Phong district by 2025.
