In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, despite unfavourable weather conditions and negative impacts of market, Hoa Binh has basically achieved targets and even exceeded the yearly plan due to the fact that production direction and preparation of production material was carried out early.

Farmers in Hop Phong commune, Cao Phong district harvest winter-spring crop.

According to Trinh Dinh Son, Head of the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thuy district, to ensure crop production, localities are encouraged to mobilise equipment and machinery to save time and labour. The district has basically completed sowing for the summer-autumn crop.

The province's annual planting area in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop reached 71,860 ha. Localities across the province planted 35,870 ha of grain crops with a total estimated output of over 190,000 tonnes.

The total head of livestock in the first six months of this year hit 9.65 million with estimated output of 56.200 tonnes. The area of fish farming was maintained at 2,695 ha. Aquaculture output was estimated at 5,000 tonnes.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the weather at the beginning of the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop was relatively favourable for cultivating rice and cash crops. However, due to water shortage, farmers switched from growing rice to short-term cash crops, ensuring production progress.

Rice yield was estimated at 6 tonnes per ha while output reached 97.550 tonnes, equivalent to 105.8% of the yearly plan and 100.4% over the same period last year.

Trade and export promotion programmes for the province's agricultural products have been promoted. About 657 tonnes of products were exported in the first six months of this year, bringing about about 30 billion VND (over 1.1 billion USD) in value.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, extreme weather phenomena as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and hail might occur from July to August. Heatwave and severe heatwave are also likely to occur. The unfavourable weather condition is likely to happen more frequently, leaving negative effect on production activities.

Vuong Dac Hung, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the province's agricultural sector has asked districts and cities to focus on direction to promote crop production from the beginning of the crop to successfully implement the year production plan.

It is necessary to expand planting area as well as intensive cultivation to increase productivity and output. Trade promotion and consumption and export of agricultural products should be pushed up, along with effectively implementation of policies to encourage businesses to invest in agriculture and rural areas, the official added.
