Thornberry highlighted the strong development of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership over the past time, including cooperation in security-defense.

He recalled the good impression of his visit to Vietnam in May 2017 and emphasized on promoting parliamentary exchanges in the time ahead.

He also recognized Vinh’s significant contributions over the past three years to enhancing the rapports between Vietnam and the US.

For his part, Ambassador Vinh affirmed that Vietnam always attaches great importance to cooperation with the US, including parliamentary ties and locality-to-locality collaboration.

The two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concerns such as strengthening cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and making contributions to ensuring peace, security and prosperity in the region, particularly navigation security, safety and freedom.

Earlier on June 18, Ambassador Vinh met former US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel to discuss remarkable strides in Vietnam-US relations.

They agreed that the development of the partnership framework has created a momentum for stronger collaboration in all fields such as security-defence, addressing war aftermaths, and cooperation in regional issues of mutual concerns.

Ambassador Vinh thanked the former defense secretary for his sentiment towards Vietnam as well as his active contributions to the enhancement of Vietnam-US ties.
