Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Do Muoi, passed away at 11:12 pm on October 1, 2018 at the ripe old age of 101 at the 108 Military Hospital, said the National Commission of Health Services for Senior Officials.

He died of old age after a period of serious illness despite efforts by doctors and his family.

More information on his funeral will be announced later.

Comrade Do Muoi was born on February 2, 1917 in Dong My commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi.

He made great contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation through the resistance wars and periods of national construction and defence at various positions he held, especially during the Doi Moi (renewal) period when he was the top leader of the Party (from June 1991 to December 1997). He was awarded the 80-year Party membership insignia.
