(HBO) - The great victory of the Hoa Binh Campaign 70 years ago still maintains its value at present, and the victory's spirit is being upheld in the cause of building and protecting the country in general and Hoa Binh province in particular.

Under the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee headed by President Ho Chi Minh, and the direct command of the General Military Commission and the General High Command, the army and people launched the Hoa Binh Campaign(December 10, 1951 - February 25, 1952) and gained triumph.

The province shows good performance in educating young generations on the historic tradition of the locality.

The Hoa Binh Campaign victory was an important event in the resistance war against the French colonialists, demonstrating the strategic vision, flexibility and creativity of the Politburo, the Party Central Committee, the General Military Commission and the General High Command.

It marked the development of the Vietnam People's Army in terms of tactics, technique, and ability to fight continuously for a long time on both the direct front and that behind the enemy; and at the same time a new step in the Vietnamese military art in the resistance war against French colonialists.

On the Hoa Binh battlefield, as many as 6,012 enemy troops were killed. The locality’s troops and people seized 24 cannons of various kinds, 788 guns, 98 radios; destroyed 12 cannons and 246 military vehicles; shot down 9 planes, sank and burned 17 canoes and ships.

At the Trung Du and inter-zone 3 battlefields, as many as 15,237 enemy troops were eliminated from the battle. The locality’s troops collected 6,126 guns of all kinds, and liberated an area of 4,000 square kilometres with more than 1 million people.

With the success of the Hoa Binh Campaign, the fight of the army and people of Hoa Binh at the Trung Du and inter-zone 3 - the important coordination front of the Hoa Binh Campaign achieved significant results.

This victory helped change the situation in the Northern Delta, defeating the enemy's plot to capture a free zone and divide the Muong ethnic group and rebuild an "autonomous Muong land" in Hoa Binh; and smashing the French colonialists’ illusion to regain the upper hand on the battlefield.

In a study on the war of the French colonialists in Indochina,Bernard B. Fall - a French journalist and historian, said that the loss of life and equipment of the French side in the Hoa Binh Campaign was equal to the loss in the Border Campaign in 1950 and the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954.

The provincial Party Committee and authorities, and people have applied historical values and lessons from the Hoa Binh Campaign to further promote development and innovation in the locality.

From a locality with poor economy, weak infrastructure, and low educational level, Hoa Binh overcame all hardships and challenges to escape from poverty and make remarkable developments, with economic growth now ranking among the highest in the northern mountainous provinces.

In 2021, the province completed 16 out of 21 targets set in the provincial Party congress’s resolution, ensuring great balances of the economy with GRDP per capita reaching 61.5 million VND. Total social investment was estimated at 17.1 billion VND.

Hoa Binh’s urbanisation ratio reached 31.6 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of poor household decreased to 6.6 percent.

The locality had nine more communes recognised as new-style rural areas, lifting the total of communes meeting new rural criteria in the province to 65./.
