Family is the home of each person and the cell of a society. It also plays a significant role in the formation and development of each person’s personality. On May 4, 2001, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 72/2001/QD-TTg, designating June 28 as the Vietnamese Family Day. Over the past years, Hoa Binh province has carried out a number of activities to honour the family traditions and help develop prosperous, progressive, equal, happy "cells of society”.

There are 220,509 households in Hoa Binh province at present, including 23,582 comprising fathers or mothers and children, 18,520 comprising one generation (only husbands and wives), 96,639 comprising two generations, 77,043 comprising at least three generations, and 4,725 households of other types, according to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Over the past years, the culture, sports and tourism sector has advised the provincial People’s Committee about plans, projects, and programmes on family affairs.

To popularise the message of building happy families to local residents, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the culture and information divisions of district-level localities have boosted communications by hanging banners; holding forums on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness (March 20), the Vietnamese Family Day (June 28), and the National Action Month for Domestic Violence Prevention and Control; disseminating the family code of conduct and the criteria for ensuring a happy family; and spreading information about family affairs at meetings and activities of local Party cells, residential areas, and groups.

In particular, the communal-level People’s Committees have maintained anti-domestic violence models. There are now 170 anti-domestic violence models according with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s standards, along with 1,488 anti-domestic violence groups in Hoa Binh. All the 151 communal-level localities have also established steering boards for family affairs and clubs of families of sustainable development. Those efforts have helped honour and spread the good traditional values of Vietnamese families, and improve public awareness of building prosperous, progressive, and happy families.

However, it is a fact that today’s families have to face numerous difficulties and challenges. Many ethical values of families are being eroded and show signs of degradation. Some families have been affected by social vices. Domestic violence is growing while the bonds among family members are becoming loose.

To improve the quality of family affairs in the coming time, the province’s steering board for this issue released a document in April this year to promote the organisation of communications activities in response to the International Day of Families, the Vietnamese Family Day, and the National Action Month for Domestic Violence Prevention and Control 2024. These are occasions for sectors, all-level authorities, and organisations to call on families to join hands in preserving, upholding, and bringing into play the good traditional cultural values and conduct in each Vietnamese family, promoting gender equality, and preventing domestic violence.
